My co-op is being conducted at a physiotherapy office and my role is to shadow one of the PTA's that works there, which consists of a variety of different tasks. Some being more glamorous than others.
A lot of the tasks I do on a daily basis involve maintaining a clean facility. That includes doing the laundry when it is required to be done, wiping down the beds after each client has been on them, cleaning the gym equipment at the start of each day, and also making sure the front lobby is vacuumed and clear of any salt from outside. This part of my job is not so glamorous but it needs to be done and I don't mind doing it at all.
Another part of my job is managing clients files. I am required to find clients files for the next day so the physiotherapists can be ready to start their day right away. I also go through all the discharge files. This means when clients haven't come in for over 3 months that I have to go through their file, put it in a specific order, and make sure that it is easy for the front desk to go through and discharge them.
The actual fun part of my job is working with and sitting in on client meetings. One of the main things I do is hook clients up to the IFC machine. This stands for Inferential current and its a form of electrotherapy. It helps alleviate pain and wake up the muscles the clients have been refraining to use. I also give ultrasounds. Not the ultrasound to see a baby, its another form of electrotherapy and it gets into the deep muscles and is also another way to alleviate pain.
This is pretty much all I do at my co-op and Im learning so much and loving it.

Hi Jacob,
ReplyDeleteLearning all aspects of a job is important. It is good that you are learning the behind the scene work because I think it gives us all a better understanding of what it takes for a business to run efficiently. Being able to sit in on client meeting is such a good opportunity while in school, it definitely gives you a preview of the job you are interested in! I have never had electrotherapy administered to myself, so I did not know it was able to alleviate pain. I hope the rest of your placement goes well, keep up the hard work! Word count: 104
Hey Jacob,
ReplyDeleteThis all sounds really exciting and I am glad you are enjoying it and learning a lot! The jobs that you are required to do sound very similar to the jobs I did when I did a co-op at a physiotherapy clinic and I honestly learned so much. I am happy you are learning lots and they are really lucky to have a hard working co-op student like you. All the best this semester!
Ashley!
