Playing My Role

It's important to know what role you play in your co-op placement so you don't ever seem lost in what you're doing, and also so it doesn't look like you're not contributing to the overall success of the company you're working for. It's easy for the employer to see this, and it could potentially cost you a position in the future!

For me personally, I figured out my role in my placement from the very start. I run a gym classes in high school for grade 9 boys and grade 9 girls. For the most part, the teachers I'm working with explain to the class what it is that we are going to be doing for the week - the kids do one sport or activity for a whole week and then switch the following week - and then I usually set up the game or activity they will be doing. I enjoy doing this because it allows me to get involved with the kids and it also gives me something to do.

Depending on what sport we're playing, I sometimes referee the games and if the teams are uneven in any way, I join in and participate in the class. This is always fun for me because I always just crush the other teams - unless it's hockey - and it lets me break a sweat first thing in the morning, which is a great way to start your day! Period 2, like I said, I'm either in the gym teaching a grade 9 girls gym, or I'm in the fitness room with grade 11/12 students. During this time I try to get a workout in and I know one of the students from work and since he doesn't have a workout partner I usually just jump in with him.

My placement is not stressful at all and it allows me to work on my skills with younger people. I don't really like kids at all because they're loud and energetic and I'm quite the opposite, but for short periods of time I think I'm getting better overall.
